These are great pants for hiking and backpacking. They're well built, lightweight, very comfortable, convert into shorts, dry quickly when they get wet, and includes a zippered pocket to keep important items safe, like car keys. Plus they include built-in bug repellent to keep insects away, except (of course) for the fly. My only warning is that Officio tends to have a slightly larger fit (for me at least), so I buy one size smaller than I usually do for other clothing. I don't know if others have that same experience or not.

I love these pants, and worked very well for a trip to Central America (Panama). The convertible feature is fantastic and it keeps very cool, dry, and I couldn't wash for a few days while I wore these pants but they didn't stink as other trousers and pants can after more than a day or two of use. That alone is worth 5 stars.
I have three minor gripes for which I deducted one star (otherwise would have given 5 stars):
(1) They sit a bit loose at the waist, almost as if by design they made it looser than the size they mark - it does make it comfortable, but then you need to always wear a belt
(2) They have a slightly ballooning shape while the product image shows a more narrower shape which is not the case. It does mean that the pants don't hug your leg and therefore more comfortable, but I prefer a slightly narrower silhouette
(3) The rear hip pocket is zippered, which is great, but I often struggle to open these completely with one hand in a single tug. They usually open only 3/4th the way, and I need a second tug or hold the other end with my other hand (logistically challenging) to open them completely.
These are not major gripes and I can live with them.
Also note to folks heading to the tropics, rainforests, etc.: The insect repellant works well with mosquitoes and a few other smaller bugs, but in Central America, there were a few others bugs for which you need DEET products, so if you are traveling to the tropics or heavily forested areas, do not rely on ExOfficio insect repellant products alone, carry some bug spray with DEET. This is not a ding against the manufacturer, but wanted to bring this to everyone's attention. I suspect most will not want DEET on their clothing except in a few instances for which you can just carry a bug spray with DEET.

For the guy that has everything. Men who are outdoors alot like this.They can go from Day to night just by zipping the bottom back on. Nice for traveling as take up less room in a suitecase.
